Ragamuffin: stuck in the past
… or moving forward
O
ne of the first hard drives was only 5 mgs and it was the size of two refrigerators! The hard drive weighed about 4000 lbs and possibly could hold two mp3 songs! No, I do not want to go back to the days when computers were like that.
Someone has said: “When you drive down a country road and see a turtle stuck on the fencepost you know several things:
- Someone put it there – he didn’t get there by himself
- He really doesn’t belong stuck on a fencepost
- While he is stuck on a fencepost he can’t move forward
- You just want to help it get going again….”
Many Salvationists just want to see The Salvation Army “get going again”.
Peter closes his letter to Christ-followers by sharing some thoughts on how to keep moving forward, how not to become stuck… but he also shares some thoughts on how to become steadfast rather than “stuck”
Peter says: We need to be people of service 1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Humble servant-hearted people are an asset to any church/corps. When attitudes of selfishness or ego reign-in the church, the church is hindered. Peter – like Jesus – calls all Christ followers to become servant-hearted, humble people. Don’t allow the virus of negativity to make the church sick. People who carry this egotistical “me” virus, with a dash of bitterness and negativity, discourage other attenders. These folks drive away seekers and create a dark oppressive cloud over the church/corps. It is like putting up a large “You are Not Welcome” sign for new people. On the other hand, servants are helpful not hurtful to the cause of Christ. People of service help to move the church forward… the choice is yours… the choice is mine.
