Shade of grey | vampires to messiahs
I‘ve been looking for the book Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. I wanted it before we went on holiday but despite trawling several book shops it wasn’t to be found. Eryn and I had some time to kill in Canary Wharf [an area of London] so we bought ‘Horrid Henry and his Nits’ and I thought I’d check once more. I rummaged ‘books etc..’ but to no avail. So I asked.![]()
“Have you got Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt?”
“Whose it by?”
“Anne Rice.”
“Try the horror section.”
With a stupid me ‘why didn’t I think of that’ roll of the eyes I wander to the horror section and there it was!
“Anne Rice, the chronicler of vampires, witches and - under the pseudonym A. N. Roquelaure - of soft-core S&M encounters, [has published] “Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt,” a novel about the 7-year-old Jesus, narrated by Christ himself. “I promised,” she says, “that from now on I would write only for the Lord.” It’s the most startling public turnaround since Bob Dylan’s “Slow Train Coming” announced that he’d been born again.”
Read more of this here. I can hear the ‘evangelical band marketing wagon’ coughing into life as we speak.

So….did you like it? I read it pretty much the moment it hit the bookstores, so it’s been a while (2 years, I think). But I really liked it. All speculation about Christ’s life, obviously, but with a great picture of Jewish life and cult (in the non-pejorative sense) during that time which I found pretty informative. I read something about the amount of research Rice did and it was staggering.
The first person took a little getting used to - but yes I enjoyed it; I’m looking forwardto the follow ups. NT Wright was pretty much involved which was interesting
Oh! That’s one detail I missed! (NT Wright) wow.
